Rose Houper (Born 5/6/1920) … 95 years old. Good old-fashioned ‘fight.’ Not the kind with boxing gloves. Not the kind that comes out of cowardice. The kind that only a single mother of 2 boys can feel down to her core. The kind that comes out of scraping by as 1 of 9 children during the Depression. Rose Houper had the “good fight,” and she used it every single day on behalf of her 2 boys.It was never easy to make ends meet, or provide the very basics, but somehow she managed to do so; and in turn, single-handedly raised 2 boys that learned the “good fight” as well. Her older son, Charlie Houper, fought on behalf of this community as Sheriff of Chemung County. He loved to “fight” for the community, his family, and was loved dearly by his mother.Rose’s younger son, Rick Houper, brought the “good fight” home from Vietnam where he continued to further his career in the transportation industry and raised a family that would fight for him through the same love. Yes … love underpins this “fight,” and Rose Houper kept it going until her passing in the early morning of July 6, 2015. Thank you for putting up a “fight,” Mother and Grandma Houper.Your family loves you for it, and we are grateful for every battle you fought on our behalf. The family has elected not to have any calling hours, but instead honor her memory privately. Rose's guestbook may be signed in obituaries at www.olthof.com
