Wayne J. Sowers, Age 90, of Elmira, Passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at home with his loving family at his side. Wayne was born September 20, 1933 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Wayne N. and Audrey (Bartlett) Sowers. He was a graduate of Elmira City Schools and was married to the former Alice (Bannon) Sowers on November 5, 1953. He worked at NYSEG prior to entering the US Army. He served his country from 1952 to 1955 and was an airplane mechanic. One of his proudest moments in the service was when General Anthony C. McAuliff shook his hand prior to boarding his aircraft while stationed in Germany. Upon his return from the service Wayne went back to work at NYSEG where he worked as an equipment operator until his retirement in 1994 following 41 years of service.
Wayne was a member of St. Mary’s Church and a past member of the Eagles Club and in his spare time, he enjoyed baseball following in NY Mets and watching football. He also was an umpire and referee for local sports. Wayne could also be found compiling family genealogy and working on his computer and tablet.
Surviving is his wife of 70 years Alice B. (Bannon) Sowers, his three sons, James Michael (Ramona) Sowers of Durham, NC, Robert William (Darlene) Sowers of Pine City, Daniel Joseph (Linda) Sowers of Elmira, six grandchildren, Christopher (Elena) Sowers, Matthew (Christina) Sowers, Leeann Sowers, Andrew (Mariah) Sowers, Alison (Stefan) Bakun, Alexander Sowers, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents and his seven siblings.
Family and friends are invited to call from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, Monday, July 22, 2024 at Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY 14901. His funeral service will be held there immediately following at 1:00 PM with Deacon Joe Erway officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery.
