Walter E. Smith Age 90, was born January 21, 1928 in Elmira, the son of the late Charles and Alma (Audette) Smith passed away peacefully on Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. His daughter, Maxine Lorraine (Smith) DeWitt along with many other relatives preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Carol J. (Jessop) Smith; daughter, Phyllis M. (Smith) Chichester; beloved grandchildren: Katrina A.(Dave) Myers, Theodore F. DeWitt, Christopher J. Chichester, Jennifer C. Chichester and Alexander C. Chichester; along with multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends. Walter was a father figure to many. He was a Veteran of the US Navy and proudly served his country in the Pacific/Asia during WW II. Prior to joining the NYSDOC, he was a dedicated policeman with the Elmira Police Department for several years. Walter retired from the Elmira Correctional Facility in the late 80's. He was a faithful member of the American Legion Elmira Post. He enjoyed playing poker with his many friends. Above all, Walter was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and dedicated family man. Family and friends are invited to attend Graveside Services at the Woodlawn National Cemetery 1826 Davis Street Elmira, NY on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 11:00 am. Reverend James Crupi will officiate and the Chemung County Veteran Honor Guard will accord Mr. Smith Military Honors.
