Wallace R. Hunt, age 100, passed away on April 9, 2023, at the Bath VA, CLC3. Born February 18, 1923, in Saugerties, NY. He was the son of the late Richard and Mary (Longendyke) Hunt. Wally and his deceased wife, Gretchen (Frampton) Hunt, were long time residents of Webb Mills, NY. After his wife passed, he moved to Appleridge Independent Living in Horseheads, NY, where he resided for 8 years. He moved to the Bath VA in the fall of 2022. Wally was a WWII Veteran. He joined the Navy on March 2, 1943. He was a crew member of a PBM amphibious plane in the Pacific theater. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class. In 2013, at age 90, Wally and his son-in-law, Craig went on an honor flight out of Rochester, NY. He worked for the New York Telephone Company for 36.5 years, 9 years as a lineman/construction and 27.5 years as an installer/repairman. He was a life-time member and past president of the Pine City Sportsman Club, a bow hunter education instructor for several years, and he owned and operated the Huntsman Archery Shop out of his home. Wally enjoyed archery, golf, fishing, and hunting. He was also on many bowling leagues over the years and gave up the sport at age 98. He was very involved in the Masons. He was a member of Ivy Lodge #397. Also, he was a past master in 1972, 2000, and 2002. Wally was Assistant Grand Lecturer 1977-1978, District Deputy Grand Master 1979 - 1980 (Chemung, Tioga, and Schuyler Districts), Past High Priest Elmira Chapter #42, Past Illustrious Master Southern Tier Council #16, Past Eminent Commander of St. Omers Commandery #19. Wally was also a member of Cashmere Grotto, Shrine, and York Rite Cross Honor. In addition to his parents, wife, and siblings, he is predeceased by his son Stephen “Jiggs” Hunt, and great-grandson Parker Sayles. He is survived by his children: Alan and Kay “Buckey” (Hunt) Goldstein of Berlin, NY, Jim and Donna “Reggie” (Hunt) Sayles of Horseheads, NY, Craig and Gail “Stormy” (Hunt) Bailey of Lima, NY, James “Sam” and Shirley (Cook) Hunt of Bradenton, FL, Danny “Boone” and Darlene (Buck) Hunt of Geneseo, NY, daughter-in- law Karen Ohrman Hunt of Matthews, NC. Wally is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was well loved by many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. He took on the role of father and grandfather to many throughout the neighborhood. Family and friends are invited to call at Olthof Funeral Home 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00PM. Masonic committal service will be on Saturday, April 29th from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM at Olthof Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 30, at 11:30 AM at Webb Mills Methodist Church 1623 Pennsylvania Ave., Pine City, NY. Burial will be held Monday, May 1st at 10:00 AM at the Webb Mills Cemetery (behind the church).
