W. Jean Steiner

March 7, 1932 — October 23, 2024

W. Jean Steiner, 92, a resident of Caton, NY, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024. She was born March 7, 1932 to the late John and Dorothy (Peck) Cornell. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose kindness touched everyone who knew her. With her gentle, kind eyes and loving heart, Jean found joy in nature’s beauty, peaceful settings, and the comfort of family. She was a gifted artist who expressed her creativity through quilting, crocheting, tole painting, ceramics, and needlepoint, filling her home with beautiful, handmade treasures.

In addition to her parents, she was reunited in peace with: her beloved husband of 69 years Walter Steiner; her sister Sandra Foulk; her brother-in-law Richard Steiner and his wife Jean; her daughter-in-law Shirley Steiner; and her step-granddaughter Debbie Hammond.

Jean’s legacy lives on through her loving family, including: her children – Frederick Steiner, Valerie Austin (David), Bonnie Steiner, Fritzi Shedden (Max), Melanie Johnson (Michael), Murray Steiner, Tina Douglas (William), and John Steiner (Dawn); her treasured grandchildren – Christopher Austin, Michael Austin (Kim), Travis Cleveland, Jeremy Cleveland, Katie Hughlett (Greg), T.J. Schulz (Brittany), Robert Shedden, Jerry Shedden (Donna), Heather Bair (Robert), Jake Johnson (Megan), Jesse Johnson, Shevonne Steiner (Tim), Christina Castaldo (Paul), Jennifer Van Etten, Andrew Smith (Aimee), Heather Smith, Alex Smith (Sulie), Kelly Peterson (Eric), Jami Coles (Andrew), Mariah Mallard, and John Steiner, Jr.; her step-grandchildren - David Hammond (Patty), Michael Hammond (Diane), Michelle Wilson, and Nancy Hammond; and thirty great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff at Chemung County Nursing Facility, whose compassion and care for Jean will always be remembered.

In honor of Jean’s gentle spirit, a private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY 14904.
