Verna M. Garrett

Verna Marie Garrett was born in Elmira, New York on December 26, 1931, to Mortimer Henry Garrett and Lela F Kelts.  She passed away at the age of 92 on September 21, 2024, in Sebring, Florida. Verna lived in the Elmira area until retiring and moving to Sebring, Florida in 1993.  Verna was a self-motivated, take-charge lady.  A valued employee of Sysco for more than 30 years, she performed various roles at Sysco as Secretary, Office Manager, Training Manager, and finally as Personnel Director. Verna was a gardener, avid reader, historian, and genealogist.  Verna had a small orange and grapefruit grove at her house in Sebring. The delicious fruit was shared with many friends and family.  Verna’s last few years were spent at Lakeshore Manor, an assisted living facility. She liked to be busy and participated in multiple activities at Lakeshore Manor. Verna made friends easily, always had a smile, and had a great sense of humor.  She was a dedicated member of First Sebring Methodist Church.  Verna is survived by her nieces Rebecca (Reese) Booth and Denise Poll and nephews Michael (Claudia) Fitzgerald and Gregory (Barbara) Covell and honorary granddaughters Maya O’Hara and Jasmen O’Hara. Verna was predeceased by her sisters Jean Duhigg and Helen Fitzgerald and niece Nancy Cummings.  Verna’s final resting place is Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York alongside her mother.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Sebring Methodist Church in Sebring, Fl or a charity of your choosing.
