Sylvia R. Tomlinson

Sylvia “Mrs. T.” Tomlinson, 80, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, in Elmira, NY. Born on December 6, 1944, Sylvia lived a life defined by her resilience, dedication to education, and love for her family & friends.

Sylvia raised her three children - David Hughes, Eric (Victoria) Tomlinson, and Sarah (Christopher) Wojnarek on her own, instilling in them the values of perseverance and hard work. Known affectionately as "Gramma T," she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren:   Danielle, Kamri, Noah, Ava, Harold and Ramona.

Education was Sylvia’s passion. She earned an impressive four master’s degrees and dedicated over 30 years to teaching. Her greatest professional achievement was founding and running her own tutoring business, “Mrs. T’s Tutoring,” which she operated for three decades. Through this work, she helped countless students reach their goals and discover their potential.

Sylvia found joy in animals & trips to the casino and took great pride in living life on her own terms. She was happy to age in place at home, surrounded by the memories she created over the years.

She is also survived by her brothers, nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her granddaughters, Sarah and Harriett Hughes.

There will be no services at this time, but a celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held at a later date. Her legacy of strength, compassion, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her.
