After 91 years, the place prepared for Robert O. Erway by his Lord and savior was occupied on Friday, July 27th, 2018.Bob’s journey to his heavenly home began on July 12, 1927 in Elmira, NY when his parents, Harry G. Erway, Sr. and Dorotha G. Frisbee Erway welcomed him to their family.He married Margaret M. Gublo and together they raised six children: Bruce (Solveig) Erway, Joann (Paul) Waggoner, Joe (Sharon) Erway, Mary (Nick) Opper, Chris (Kathy) Erway and Phil (Marlyn) Erway who predeceased Bob on March 17, 2018.In addition to his parents and his son, he was also predeceased by his wife Marge in 1982, his wife Helen of Sun City, AZ in 1995, his brother Charles F. Erway and his sister Ellen L. Tobey in 2014.Bob is also survived by his brother, Harry G. "Slim" Erway, Jr. of Penn Yan, NY, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bob was the former owner of Erway Ambulance Service from 1950 to 1974.He pioneered the use of the first Shockmobile, which was the precursor to the current advanced life support vehicles in use today.His compassion and love for people was a fruit of his faith in God and love for his family.Bob lived out his faith daily.His legacy will be his strong faith passed down through the generations of his family.A true prayer warrior, he always prayed for the needs of others, right up to the very end.Those that knew and loved him will mourn his earthly absence but rejoice in knowing he is walking in the presence of the Lord who greeted him with the words “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Friends and family are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport, NY on Monday, July 30th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.A Prayer Service will be held there on Tuesday, at 9:45 AM followed by a Mass of Christian to be held at St. Mary’s Church, 224 Franklin St. Elmira, NY on Tuesday, July 31st at 10:30 AM. Father Walter Wainwright will preside.Interment immediately following at St. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Elmira, where the Chemung County Veteran's HonorGuard will accord Mr. Erway with Military Honors. Memorial donations may be directed to the DAV - Disabled American Veterans, 434 Garrison Place, Elmira Heights, NY 14903.
