Robert Allen Abernathy, a native of Lockport, NY passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2024 in Elmira, NY. He was 56.
Born September 28, 1967 to the late Martin L. and Evelyn B. (Mullen) Abernathy, Robert grew up in Lockport. He took great pride in being a resident of the “West End” (specifically on Bacon Street). As a teen, he enjoyed playing basketball games with friends and relatives in Grossi Park in Lockport. Bobby was an intense follower of football (specifically the Buffalo Bills and in his younger years, the New York Giants). He could talk football statistics endlessly.
Bobby loved cooking, especially making delicious pizza, calzones and stromboli for family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his elder sister, Kathy Abernathy, and several beloved aunts and uncles. He was the grandson of the late Rose (D’Allessandro) Mullen of Lockport. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Martin L. and Eva Abernathy of Missouri, as well as his maternal grandfather, Vincent Earl Mullen.
He is survived by his daughter Destiny J. Kenny and husband Jacob; his grandchildren Ireland and Oliver Kenny; his siblings - Paula Scheffer, Debi (Daniel) Haseley, Judy (Paul) Swanson, Gail (John) Linderman and Mark (Diane) Abernathy; his nieces and nephews - Erin (Mike) Kusnierczak, Tracey (Jason) Poeller, Carly Haseley, D.J. Haseley (fiancé Taylor DeCook), Sean Conley, Kristen (Andy) SanFilippo, Heather Swanson, Desiree (Dylan) Linderman-Jareo, Matthew Linderman, Robert Linderman, Katelynn (Daniel) Miller, and Shannon Abernathy as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. Bob also is survived by dear aunts and uncles and many cousins on the Mullen side of the family.
The family would like to thank Pastor Alan Bauch of Trinity Lutheran Church for the care and counsel he gave Robert in recent years.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church 67 Saxton Street, Lockport, NY. Family and friends are asked to wear a Buffalo Bills theme or red, white, and blue to the service. Interment will take place at Cold Spring Cemetery.
