Richard E. "Slats" Budnick

Richard E. “Slats” Budnick, 79, of Elmira, NY passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Mary Frederick Budnick; brothers, Robert Budnick and Francis Budnick; sisters, Helen (Bill) Brion, Jean (Jack) Backer and Gladys (Archie) Naples; special friends, Tom Dininny and Lenny Leljedal. Slats is survived by his loving wife of 48 wonderful years, Mary L. Zimmer Budnick; daughter, Karen (Michael) Pangallo; grandchildren, Parker and Peiyton Pangallo; siblings, William and Roger (Kathy) Budnick, Mary Ellen Green; sisters-in-law, Carol and Linda Budnick; numerous loving nieces and nephews; grand dogs, Kooper and Knox and cat, Sheiva “The Boss”; close friends, Jimmy (Ruthie) Miele, Bill Liddy, Gail Hicks and Debbie Dininny. Slats was a graduate of Southside High School. He retired from S.M. Flickinger Co. after 25 years and the Elmira City School District after 5 years. He loved to fish, cook, bake, playing at the casino and antiquing. He was an avid collector of coins, pocket watches and clocks.Slats enjoyed being the “Mayor” of Robert Street while sitting on his porch with family and friends. He enjoyed hanging out at Bill Liddy’s gas station, The Homestead and Xcel Dairy. Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 18, 2017 at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY from 5 to 7 pm with a funeral service to immediately follow at 7 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
