Ramona May Black (née Taylor) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on June 12, 2018 in Elmira, NY after a long battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 89. Ramona was born on March 5, 1929 at home in Pine City, NY to her parents, Wyland and Anna (Johnson) Taylor. She graduated from Southside High School in 1947 and married Edward Black in October of 1948. After Edward returned from the service, he and Ramona moved to Elmira, NY where Mr. Black worked as a local Allstate agent. Ramona established and led the first local Girl Scout chapter in Elmira and later dedicated her time to caring for her grandchildren, golfing, and volunteering for the LPGA and American Cancer Society. Ramona is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Szewczyk-Black and Myron Szewczyk of Horseheads, NY; her son, Jeffrey Black; and grandchildren Nicole Szewczyk-Evans, Jonathan Szewczyk, Adam Black, and Michael Black; and one great-granddaughter, Jade Nicole Black. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Black; her sister, Evelyn Benson; her brother, Wyland Taylor, Jr; and daughter-in-law, Sue Benson Black. Ramona T. Black will be laid to rest in a graveside service on June 15, 2018 at 12:30pm.
