Phyllis M. Straw

Phyllis M. Straw Age 102, of Elmira, NY, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021 at Bethany Manor, Horseheads, NY. She was born in Elmira, NY on July 10, 1918, the daughter of the late Lester B. and Gladys M. Straw. Phyllis had a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching, with a double major in French and English from Elmira College in 1940. She retired as an office clerk at Moore Business Forms in Elmira. Phyllis taught Sunday School at the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church, volunteered for the Southport Historical Society, Meals on Wheels, and belonged to the French Circle, the Society Club and the May Day Celebration. Phyllis was a kind, caring, compassionate woman. She adored children and was the neighborhood grandmother. She loved sitting on the front porch and visiting. Phyllis had a sweet tooth, and loved muffins, cookies, and ice cream. She is survived by her niece, Debra Springfield of California; nephews, David and Daniel Straw of California. Phyllis was predeceased by her brother, Larry L. Straw. Friends are invited to call at the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church, 1238 Pennsylvania Avenue, Pine City, NY on Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM with funeral services to follow from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Rev. Mark Erway officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will provide flowers, and request memorial contributions be made to the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church, in Phyllis' name.
