P. Dean Place Age 86 of 335 Irvine Place Elmira, NY, passed away Wednesday March 13, 2002 peacefully at St. Joseph?s Hospital. He was born April 10, 1915 in Monroeton, PA the son of the late Fred and Daisy (Northrop) Place. Dean is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 61 years, Helen Calkins; sons, Joe (Jeri) Place of Elmira, NY; Alan (Donna) Place of Bradenton, FL; brother, Fred (Florence) Place of Towanda, PA; sisters, Amy Barnes and Vida (Art) Spengler all of Towanda, PA; grandsons, Robert (Debra) Place of Newburgh, ME; Scott Place (Stacey Martin) of Elmira, NY; great grandson, Deven Place of Elmira, NY; step-granddaughter, Kelli (Eric) Wenzel of North Carolina;sisters; Amy Barnes and Vida (Art) Spangler, and brother Fred (Florence) Place all of Towanda, PA, along with many nieces and nephews. Dean was predeceased by his brothers, Wayne and Gordon; sisters, Ruth and Julia. Dean graduated from the Towanda High School in 1933. He was a professional baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles farm teams all through the south. His last years of professional baseball were with the Elmira Pioneers in 1943 and also for the Sayre Shops. He was a great sportsman especially enjoying softball, bowling, fishing, hunting and loved his golf. He was a member of the Mark Twain Golf Club for years and the Soaring Eagles Golf Club as well. Mr. place was a member of the Elmira Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame. He belonged to the Elmira Heights Masonic Lodge # 913 and was a 32nd degree mason belonging to the Corning Consistory. He most recently received his 60-year pin from the Heights Lodge. Dean along with Walt McPherson won the NY State bowling doubles Championship in 1952.Family and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services Saturday March 16, 2002 at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY at 9:30 AM. The Reverend Howard L. Hunt will officiate. Interment will follow in the Monroeton Cemetery Monroeton, PA. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be directed to Southern Tier Hospice 11751 East Corning Road Corning, NY 14830. A ?Candle of Remembrance? may be lit in Dean?s name at www.olthof.com.
