Gabel,Norbert ?Bert? Well known Musician, Performer, Teacher, Composer. Born in Vienna, Austria the beloved son of the late Bernhard and Minna Gabel. At Bert?s earliest age he loved music and its affect it had on people?s life.Graduating from the Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor?s Degree in piano and accompaniment.Shortly after residing in the United States, escaping the many horrific actions happening in Germany he began to take his music very seriously. After his graduation, Bert felt the need to serve the United States to sustain his freedom. He enlisted in the United States Army serving in the Pacific Theater and became a member of the DAV. Once he fulfilled his devotion to his adopted country, Bert further pursued his love of music, working in a numberof family owned music stores throughout the area.He gave his music to all who would listen, sing-a-longs, many area retirement homes, hospitals, theaters. He was very proud to be a member of the RSVP, one of the originalmembers of the Bill Butler Orchestra which later became the Twin Tier Community Orchestra, having concertized with the late Edward Whittenhall at the Clemens Center, many area churches, and the Glenora Festival. Surviving Bert are his Cousin Hilde Bruell of CA and many loving friends including John and Eve Govus of Elmira, Charlie and Josie Kakritz, Eugene Corbo, Judy Stasch, George and Marian Halm of Coopers Plains, andElsie Lintz of Cayuta,Friends may gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY Monday 1:00Pm to 2:00Pm with funeral service to celebrate Bert's life at the conclusion of the calling hours at 2:00 Pm. Interment will follow privately at the Woodlawn Cemetery.
