Nancy (Dunlap) Cleary, a native of Elmira, NY and longtime resident of Monroeton, PA, passed away on February 28, 2024, after a long battle with GIST, a rare form of cancer. She was 77.
Born October 7, 1946 to the late Harold and Harriet (Loveless) Dunlap, Nancy grew up in Elmira, NY graduating from Southside High School in 1965.
Through the years she worked as an order processor for S.M. Flickinger Company, a food wholesaler in Elmira Heights, NY, and as a retail associate for Sears in Johnson City, NY, Ames department store in Towanda,PA, and J.C. Penney in Wysox, PA, in addition to being an Avon representative for 30 years.
She married the love of her life, Michael Cleary, on September 6, 1969 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elmira,NY. They went on to raise their family in Owego, NY where they lived for 28 years before moving to Monroeton, PA in 1997.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by: her twin brothers Harold and Howard Dunlap; her sister Marge Forsyth; her brother William Dunlap; her sisters-in-law Debbie Dunlap and Margaret Cleary; her brothers-in-law John Cleary and William Forsyth; and her nephews John Cleary and Harold Forsyth.
She is survived by: her beloved husband of 54 years, Michael Cleary of Monroeton, PA; son Mark Cleary of Summerville, SC; daughter Michele Cleary and husband Todd Gohde of Cherry Valley, NY; her three grandchildren – Aliyah and Marcus Cleary of Summerville, SC and Jaxson Gohde of Cherry Valley, NY; brother Robert Dunlap of Elmira, NY; sister-in-law Joanne Dunlap of Rapid City, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, when a brief funeral service will begin, at Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira, NY. She will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at St. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery in Elmira, NY.
Memorial donations may be made in her honor to any charity benefiting animals, including the ASPCA, PO Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090, or to the charity of your choice.
