Lyall G. Tobey

January 16, 1920 — February 3, 2003

Age 83, died peacefully at home, Monday, February 3, 2003 with his wife of 58 years, Helen Louise Gridley Tobey at his side. He is also survived by three daughters, Anne Learn, 37, (Scott) of Goldsboro, NC; Shirley Helm, 43, (John) of Richmond, VA; Karen Dawes, 46, of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren, Hannah Dawes (13) and Alexander Helm (6); brother, Donald Tobey of Washington, DC; sisters, Marian Waugh and Althea Pock both of Penn Yan, NY; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Iva Morse Tobey; brothers, Guilford and Franklin; sisters, Elizabeth Hill and Carol Tobey; son-in-law, David Dawes. Lyall was a graduate of Corning CFA and Michigan State College. He was a purple heart Veteran of the US Army during WW II, serving in the infantry in Europe. Lyall retired from Chemung Valley Savings & Loan following 30 years of dedicated service. Lyall enjoyed those 30 years living on beautiful Dutch Hill, in Pine City, NY making a wonderful home for his family. He was a former member of the Caton United Methodist Church. Interests included: his home, music, politics, peace activism and improving the effectiveness of the United Nations and space exploration. A Celebration of Lyall?s life will be held at Caton United Methodist Church, Hendy Hollow Road, Caton, NY on Sunday, April 13, 2003 at 3:00 PM. Memorials may be directed to the Westside United Methodist Church, PO Box 3494, Elmira, NY 14905 or the Caton United Methodist Church, Hendy Hollow Rd., Corning, NY 14830.Arrangements have been entrusted to the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY.
