Passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia.He was surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home and oasis in Horseheads, NY. Lou was born on September 28, 1942 in Silver Spring, MD to David and Thora (Belle) Rubin.He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 34 years,Linda (Harris) Rubin, son, David (Denise) Rubin; daughters, JoAnn (Steve) Dwyer, Heather Flewelling, Amy Flewelling; daughter-in-love Mary Meagher; father-in-law, Howard Harris; along with 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.Lou is predeceased by his parents, David and Thora (Belle Rubin),mother-in-law Barb Harris, father-in-law Joe Lawlor, mother-in-law Verse Banfield, andmany friends. Lou proudly served in the US Navy including assignment on the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine, where he trained in the Underwater Demolition Team.He also proudly served in the US Army Reserves for over 20 years as Drill Sergeant and Weapons Instructor.He was called to Active Duty for 18 months supporting our troops during Desert Storm. Lou continued his career after the military as manager of several Singer Sewing Machine Stores in Central NY.He spent 38 years working at Sears in numerous departments. After retirement he turned his love of fishing and hunting into a profession working for Dick’s Sporting Goods and then his favorite job, Hesselson’s, in the gun department. Lou was a lifelong member of Chemung County Rod and Gun Club where he served many years on the Board of Directors.He volunteered as an instructor of hunter safety courses for 4HEC, teaching young people gun safety and how to shoot. Lou was an avidhunter, fisherman, and marksman. He enjoyed taking frequent fishing and hunting trips with his many friends. He particularly loved deep sea fishing in the Outer Banks of Cape Hatteras, NC and vacationed there with his family and friends for many years.He had a great passion for scuba diving and was a diving instructor in the years after serving in the Navy. He taught his wife and many friends to dive and particularly enjoyed dive trips that included 3 generations of his family.He loved taking cruises with family and friends,and partook in over 20 different excursions throughout the Caribbean, Pacific, and Alaska. Lou was a dear friend to many and beloved by all.He was known for his fiercely loving nature, his infinitely adventurous spirit, for his kind heart, and for his twisted sense of humor. The family suggeststhat in lieu of flowers or donations, that you take the time to get out into the Great Outdoors.When you find yourself anywhere near woods filled with deer, a stream known for trout, or waves breaking on the beach, you can be sure Louie’s spirit will be there with you, enjoying the beauty of the moment. The Family would like to thank the Home-Based Primary Care at the Bath VA for the tremendous job they did providing the necessary items to keep him as comfortable as possible in his declining health.Lou looked forward to their visits as they were such caring people. In addition, thank you to Hospice Care First for their kindness and care in his final 2 weeks. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Woodlawn National Cemetery, 1825 Davis Street in Elmira.
