John W. Newton

John Wilson Newton Age 90, was born November 3, 1926 in Elmira and died Monday, October 30, 2017 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. His father, George Albert Newton; mother, Evelyn Ada Wilson; brothers, James Newton and George Newton; grandson, Benjamin Newton preceded him in death. John is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Flora Jane (Ernest); beloved children: daughter, Jennifer (Lester) Wolf; sons, John R. (Donna) Newton, Larry (Debi) Newton, Tim (Pam) Newton, Tom (Cheryl) Newton; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was a Veteran of WW II and served with the Army Infantry in the European Theatre. After the service, he enrolled in the first class at Elmira College that accepted men. In 1950, John and Flora were married and started a family. In 1952 they bought an old farm house on Sagetown Road and he lived there for the rest of his life. After 32 years of dedicated service, John retired from Westinghouse as a supervisor. He was a leader in the community and was active in the following: Webb Mills Volunteer Fire Department, he coached baseball and basketball, was the President of the Southport Recreation Association and assisted with Boy Scouts. He hauled his boys and the neighborhood boys to ballgames, scouts and all activities. John loved vegetable gardening, was an avid golfer and was a lifelong New York Giants fan. He was a faithful member of the Millerton United Methodist Church, where his daughter was Pastor and was a proud chicken flipper every Memorial Day as well. Private services will be held at the convenience of his family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the Millerton United Methodist Church Food Pantry or the church Building Fund 5443 Main Street Millerton, PA 16936.
