Maher, John Richard Sr. Machine Operator for Hilliard Corp. Age 61 of Kinyon Street Elmira, NY. Went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, October 6, 2001 peacefully at home. He was born January 17, 1940 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Peter and Mary (Saginario) Maher. John married Carol Russell May 11, 1963 in Elmira at St. Cecilia?s Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Carol; sons, Ted Maher and his children, Sean, Jolean, Ted Jr. and Daniel Maher of Leesburg, VA; Peter and his wife Sharon Maher of Elmira, NY; John Jr. and his wife Kathy Maher and their children, Andrew, Katie and Danny Maher also of Elmira, NY; Michael Maher and Suzie West of Sterling, VA; brother, {best friend and caregiver} Jim and his wife Diana Maher of Southport, NY and their children, Joe Maher of Charlotte, NC; Colleen Maher of Southport, NY; Patty (Bob) Howe of Elmira, NY; Pam (Todd) Curren of Gillett, PA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Tom Nellis of Corning, NY; sisters-in-law, Connie Reamer of Elmira Heights, NY; Barbara Hefferon of Waverly, NY; uncle, Stephen Fesh Sr. of Florida; along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. A host of friends, especially Tony (Angie) Tufillaro, Stan (Donna) Youmans, Fran (Joanne) Daugherty, Steve (Connie) Petris and his favorite companion, his dog, ?Missy?. His infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Maher, brother-in-laws, Roy Russell and Jack Russell, nephew Donald Bishop, predeceased him. John was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church and a member as well as the secretary/treasure of the Southern Tier Reconciliation Choir. The Hilliard Corporation employed him where he has worked for the last 33 years. He was a Veteran of the US Army serving his country from 1960 to 1962, and was honorably discharged in 1966. John was an outstanding baseball player in the area. He played ?Elmira Fast Pitch? softball for many years. Playing golf was one of his most favorite pastimes. He has been a long time fan of the Cleveland Indians baseball team. John who was a devoted Christian, showed love, compassion and comfort to those who were in need of his presence. John also had a positive outlook on life and his struggle with cancer until the very end. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY on Tuesday, October 9, 2001 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral Services will be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Paul Mather and Reverend John Bedzyk will officiate. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn National Cemetery where full Military Honors will be accorded to Mr. Maher.
