John Garry Barnes, 79, of Elmira, New York, went to be with his Lord and Savior, on November 2, 2021. Born August 7th, 1942 in Blossburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Henry and Dorothea (Brown) Barnes. He had a passion for God, his family, and his country. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Kissingen, Germany. He received medals in Marksman Rifle M-1 and Sharpshooter Rifle M-14. He worked as a lumberjack, roofer, carpenter, and in home improvements. He enjoyed wrestling, hunting, softball, volleyball, and watching boxing. He loved history, archelogy, politics, and studying the Bible. He spent his time with his family traveling, camping, and summers at the Glory Barn, in Alba, Pennslyvania. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Annalee Owens; his brothers, Richard Barnes, Douglas Barnes, Stewart Barnes, Jack Barnes, Neil Barnes; his granddaughter, Monica Ruger; and daughter, Brenda Burnett. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Carl) Barnes; his children, Alonzo (Barbara) Barnes of Elmira, Millicent Ruger (Dave Hirtler) of Horseheads, Jessie Bell of Trumansburg, Dollie (Harold) Freeman of Henrico, VA, Joni Butler of Columbia Cross Roads, PA; his grandchildren, Candace (David) Cunningham, Ricky (Janet) Ruger, Ferris Burnett, TJ Bell, Danielle Bell, Irene (Kenny) Marion, Cassondra Freeman, Micah (Ashley) Freeman, Cameron Barnes, Mathias Freeman, Aliyah Butler, Marissa Butler, Frederick Butler III, Manoah Freeman, Jonny Butler, Sarah Butler; his great-grandchildren, Maddie Bell, Troy Cunningham, Theo Bell, Summer Cunningham, Colton Marion, Alivia Ruger; and his brother, Clark (Betty) Barnes. He is being honored with a private military ceremony prior to a memorial service that is opened to the public at 4 PM on Friday, November 26th at Central Assembly of God, 1 Brenway Drive, in Horseheads.
