John F. â??Jack�? Huonker

John F. Huonker ?Jack? Age 85 formerly of Livingston Street Elmira, NY passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at the Ideal Senior Living Center in Endicott, NY. He was born January 1, 1917 in Elmira, the son of the late John F. and Loretta (Murray) Huonker. ?Jack? as he was affectionately known, was predeceased by his loving wife, of 41 years, Jean (O?Herron) Huonker; son, John F. Huonker Jr.; granddaughter, Kelli Huonker; sisters, Helen Daniels and Marilou Lambert. He is survived by his beloved children and their spouses, Joy and Carl Klein of Rochester, NY; Paul and Nancy Huonker of Apalachin, NY; Carol and Bill Lell of Birmingham, AL; Tom and Karen Huonker of Rochester, NY; Steve and Gail Hunker of Endwell, NY; along with 13 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, several nieces and nephews. ?Jack? attended St. Mary?s School and was a 1935 graduate of Southside High School. He was a Veteran proudly serving his country as a Sergeant in the US Army during WW II. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he was a wine steward for the Connecticut Yankee Lounge in the Mark Twain Hotel. He was best remembered as owning and operating the Hi-Bar Tavern on South Main Street and was noted for the excellent drinks that he made and his friendly personality. ?Jack? was a member of the Hibernians Center of Chemung County and the Knights of Columbus. He formerly belonged to the American Legion Bentley Post # 443 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a Communicant of St. Mary?s Church. ?Jack? was an avid circus buff, loved the Big Band Era and the music that went with it and enjoyed fishing. He was a genuine nice guy, true to form. He was loved by all and will dearly be missed. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY on Sunday, November 3, 2002 from 3 to 6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Mary?s Church 224 Franklin Street Elmira. The Reverend Richard Farrell will officiate. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in St. Peter and Paul?s Cemetery.In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be directed to the Alzheimer?s Support Group P. O. Box 588 Elmira, NY 14902. A ?Candle of Memory? may be lit in ?Jack?s? name at www.olthof.com.
