Joan “Joannie” V. Mitchell, 81, of Elmira, NY passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018.Joannie was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, JW Mitchell; parents, Virginia (Royce) June and John (Gertrude) Whiting; brothers, Roger Whiting, Danny Whiting and Paul Lyon; and brother-in-law, Bob Podaski. Joannie is survived by her children, Robert (Karen) Mitchell and JoLynn Mitchell; sisters, Sharon (Frank) Dunkle, Berdene Podaski and Jean Brate; brother, John (Marilyn) Lyon; sisters-in-law, Mary Catherine Whiting, Candy Whiting and Diane Lyon; grandchildren, Alicia (Tim) Diello and Brandon (Becky) Mitchell; six great-grandchildren; special friends, Julie McDonald, Debbie Mathews-Schnautz and Kathleen Aldrich; several nieces and nephews. Joannie retired from Excel Dairy after many years of dedicated service. She was a very hard worker. She was an avid card player, a Dallas Cowboys fan and an excellent baker. Joannie had a big heart and would help anyone who was in need. She loved spending time with her family and all her babies. She had a contagious smile that would light up a room. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed by all. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA, 2435 Route 352, Elmira, NY 14903. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 from 2 PM to 4 PM at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY. A memorial service will immediately follow at 4 PM. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
