Jean M. Root

ELMIRA – Jean M. Root, 91, of Elmira, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.Born on June 11, 1930 in Elmira, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Ettenberger) Murphy.She was a 1948 graduate of Elmira Southside High School. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Root; her father-in-law, Rollin Root; her mother-in-law, Mildred Root, her brother-in-law, Arthur Root and sister-in-law, Rose Root. She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne (Mark) Morris of Penn Yan, JoAnn (Bruce) Welch of Pine City, Diane Root of Elmira, Marianne (Bill) Schrom of Pine City; her grandchildren, Dan (Darcy) Morris of Michigan, Dave (Gwen) Morris of IL, Brian Welch (Ashleigh Erickson) of FL, Matthew (Christine) Welch of VA, Amy (Amy K.) Welch of Rochester, Megan Schrom of Elmira, Samantha (Randall) Ribble of Elmira, Katelyn Schrom (Jake Wilcox) of Pine City; her great grandchildren, Evan Morris, Audrey Morris, Dylan Welch and Madolyn Welch, as well as her nieces. Jean was a member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church for over 53 years.She volunteered for the Arctic League and at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in the ICU Waiting Room.She was also a member of the Italian American Veterans Auxiliary. Jean enjoyed annual trips to Atlantic City with her daughters as well as trips to the casino.She also loved spending time at their family cottage on Keuka Lake.More than anything, she cherished the time that she shared with her family. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church, 1238 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pine City with Rev. Mark Erway, officiating.Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira will be private. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital 5th Floor SNF for the wonderful care they gave Jean over the last six years.
