Age 73, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 28, 1929 in Ashland, NY the son of the late Frank and Martha (Eisserman) Kerbein. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 27 years, Patricia (Goodwin) Kerbein; daughter and son-in-law, Donna L. and Jack Walker of Colorado City, CO; step-son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Jayme Flaherty of Huntersville, NC; grandson, Jeremy Walker of Colorado Springs, CO; granddaughters, Jacqueline Hanner of South Haven, MI; Jordan and Madison Flaherty of Huntersville, NC; sister, Augusta (Paul) Blanc of Boise ID; brothers, Frank (Jean) Kerbein of Elmira Heights, NY; John (Pauline) Kerbein of Elmira, NY; mother-in-law, Dorothy A. Goodwin of Horseheads, NY; sister-in-law, Theresa Kerbein of Elmira, NY; brothers-in-law, Richard (Diane) Goodwin of Brooklyn, NY; Robert (Irene) Goodwin of Hamlin, NY; along with several nieces, nephews and precious Pointer and Boxer canine companions. He was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor (Gotshall) Kerbein; sister and brother-in-law, Hedwig and Boyd Belknap; brothers, Arthur Kerbein and Alfred Kerbein; father-in-law, Robert J. Goodwin. Jim worked at Kennedy Valve for 17 years before going into the auto-repair and towing business. He owned and operated Jim Kerbein?s Sunoco Service Station followed by Kerbein?s Auto Service until his retirement in 1992. He served his community throughout his lifetime in the various areas where he resided. He was a member of the Elmira Heights Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Chemung County Sewer Board for 10 years, and was a member of the Service Station Operators Association of Southern New York, leading the group during the oil crisis in the 1970?s. While living in Elmira, he ran unsuccessfully for the City Council in 1975 and for Mayor in 1977. He was elected Township Supervisor in Jackson Township, PA serving for 6 years. He served on the Seeley Creek Watershed Association and the Tioga County PA Farm Preservation Board. He was presented the Lions International Community Service Award in 1998 from the Wells-Jackson Lions Club. Over the years, he was very active in the Elmira Kennel Club serving as President and Vice President. Along with his wife, he bred Pointer and Boxer dogs under the prefix name of Kerbein and Boxpoint. He owner-handled numerous Pointer dogs to their American Kennel Club Championship Titles and assisted his wife in the show ring with her Boxer dogs. He spent many hours loving and caring for his ?canine kids?. Jim also enjoyed his time spent fishing on Keuka Lake. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Sunday, January 26, 2003 from 2 to 6 PM. A Prayer Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Casimir?s Church, Elmira. Interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul?s Cemetery.
