On October 28th, a heavenly breeze released the last leaf on one branch of the Scollon family tree. Helen has now joined her family & friends that preceded her. Helen was born July 22, 1924 in Barnesboro, PA. Upon graduation from Barnesboro High School, her family moved to Elmira, NY, where she resided until her death. She went to Arnot Ogden School of Nursing, receiving her RN Degree & then joined the Army as a nurse & served 3 years. She then returned to the Arnot, where she worked until her retirement. She received her BSN from Rutgers University & her Masters Degree in Education from Elmira College. Helen had a hand in starting many new services & improvements over the years at the Arnot. She did everything from bedside nursing, teaching & administrative duties over her tenure at the Arnot. Upon her retirement, she held the position of Vice President & Director of Nursing. Helen spent over 44 years in the medical field. Helen was preceded in death by her parents Richard & Mary Scollon, sisters Ruth (Elmer) Shallenberger, Wanda (Otto) Gressel, Carrie Scollon, brother Ed (Beverly) Scollon & one nephew Richard (Dick) Scollon. She was also preceded in death by her friend & companion Dr. Charles Kuonen, who she took care of in her home until his death. Helen is survived by many nieces, nephews & also by many dear friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Joni, Anne, George & Bonnie for their many visits over the last year. Also, to Scout & Chloe (fur friends) who visited her at the nursing facility. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility & the Arnot Ogden Hospital for the wonderful care & support they provided for her & her family. Helen finished her last shift at the Arnot on the morning of October 28th & finally went home. Memorial gifts can be made in the name of Helen Scollon to either the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing, or the Chemung County Humane Society. Per Helen's wishes, there will be no services. The family will have a private graveside service at a later date, in Barnesboro, PA.
