HORSEHEADS – Gerald (Jer) Barnes, 81, of Horseheads, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022 as a
result of Alzheimer’s. Born on April 8, 1941 in Mansfield, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and
Edith M. (Jebbett) Barnes.
After graduating from Southside High School, he worked for attorney John Lawless as a paralegal. In
1964, he enlisted in the US Army, serving as a Paralegal, SJA. He retired in 1989 after 26 years of service
with the rank of E-9 Sergeant Major.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, PFC Richard and Ronald Barnes, and his longtime companion, Boots.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Osenbaugh, Alberta Andrus; his brothers, David Barnes, Frederick
Barnes; several nieces and nephews; and his long-time friend, Nadine White Eagle. A special thanks to
his niece, Debbie Flasphaler for her never-ending help with Gerald’s personal affairs and his brother,
Fred.
Friends may call from 10 am-12 pm on Thursday, November 3, 2022 with a service a 12:00 pm at Olthof
Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira. Burial with full military honors will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park,
563 Jerusalem Hill Road, Elmira, NY 14901.
