Eleanor Jean Steele, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024 at the age of 99 years young. Eleanor was born in Elmira, New York, the daughter of Rae B. and Gertrude (Jones) Steele. She was predeceased by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Edward F. and Katherine Jane Steele, special nephew Robert J. Lynough, II, and several aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
Eleanor graduated from Elmira Free Academy and Elmira College. She started her career as a phlebotomist, then she went back to college to get her teaching certification. She spent many years teaching fifth grade at Booth and George Washington Schools in the Elmira City School District, from which she retired.
Eleanor enjoyed traveling, playing golf, reading and spending time with her friends and family.
Eleanor is survived by her niece Sue Steele Lynough of Elmira, with children, Elizabeth (Isaac) Zehr of Philadelphia, New York, and Nicholas Lynough of Elmira, New York, nephew, Edward R. (Kathleen) Steele of Clarence Center, New York, with their children, Christopher and Gregory Steele, niece, Katherine Eleanor Steele of Elmira, New York. Eleanor is also survived by great nephews, Declan, Finnegan and Rowan Zehr.
As per Eleanor’s request, services will be private. Special thanks to the Woodbrook Assisted Living Staff for the wonderful care Eleanor received. Also, a special thanks to the Care First Hospice Staff for Eleanor's wonderful care.
