Douglas A. Merrick

Merrick, Douglas Aage 68 of Partridge Street Elmira, NY, passed away Monday, March 11, 2002 unexpectedly at St. Joseph?s Hospital. He was born April 11, 1933 in Elmira, the son of the late George William and Olive May (Shepard) Merrick. On May 14, 1952, Douglas married Velma Kinner at her home on Hopkins Street. They have celebrated 49 wonderful years of life and love together. His survivors include: his loving wife, Velma; beloved children, Linda (Dan) Bartkowiak of Port St. Joe, FL; Douglas A. Merrick Jr. of Elmira, NY; Kimberly (Stanley) Barber Jr. of Big Flats, NY; Scott Merrick of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Crystal Bartkowiak, Carrie, Rebecca and William Barber; along with several nieces and nephews. Douglas was predeceased by his sister, Doris Merrick and brother, George Merrick Jr. He retired from Sealtest Inc. as a Truck Driver after 32 years of faithful and dedicated service. His memberships include: the Teamsters Union, Elmira Heights American Legion, Binghamton V.F.W., NRA, and Binghamton SHAD Club of Hancock, NY. Mr. Merrick was a Veteran of the US Army serving his country from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. He worked for the Elmira City School District as custodian for several years at the Broadway Elementary School. Douglas was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman and especially enjoyed gardening. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira, NY on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral Services will be held there Thursday at 11:00 AM. John P. Knapp will officiate. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery where the Chemung County Veterans Honor Squad will accord Mr. Merrick full Military Honors. Those wishing may direct Memorial Donations in the name of Douglas A. Merrick to the Bath VA Hospital Memorial Fund 76 Veterans Ave. Bath, NY 14810.
