Doug always introduced himself as "I'm Dug, D-U-G". He always answered his phone with, "Dug Here". Dug took a break from his education to enlist in the Army and served in the Pacific during World War II. When he returned from his tour of duty, he jested about completing his education and said he graduated from Millport University. (Millport U). Dug worked almost his whole life for the family business, Dalrymple Contracting, and he was going into work right up to the end of his life. He loved to joke to friends. When someone would say "Good to see you", he would answer "Better to be seen, than viewed!" Dug was a past member of Elmira Country Club, past President of Corning Country Club, Elmira City Club, Fur Fin and Feather, past President of The Cold Brook Club, The Clemens Center, Elmira Little Theater, and The Moose Club. Dug was a 37th degree Mason, of Masonic Lodge. Dug's wife Marilyn spent several years entertaining and Dug not only encouraged her, he was their "Roadie". He carried a violin case, laced with refreshments and he would say, "I'm with the band". In his home, Dug had a theater size popcorn maker and would show up wherever with bags of popcorn in hand. He loved to entertain in their home and many of good times were had by all. He also loved to hand out candy and was known as "the candyman". Dug was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved boating, traveling, skiing and was a certified scuba diver. He traveled to Central America and Belize and visited the Mayan ruins in the days you had to hike in the dense terrain with a machete. Dug spent every Opening day, for many years of trout season at Catherine Creek with a gang of buddy volunteers cooking full breakfast for all and any fishermen that came, and had a hot, hearty breakfast, free for the taking. Dug also for many years, supervised a gang to cut and erect the Southport Christmas tree. He was always ready with a helping hand for community needs. Dug also bought an island off Nova Scotia, with an Investment Club and they would spend time dropping a line and enjoying a fresh lobster. In his last few years, Dug enjoyed a weekly gathering of retired friends at Bill Cook's Garage, which was endearingly called "Cookie's Lounge". Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service and Celebration of Dug's life on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the North Presbyterian Church, 921 College Ave., Elmira, NY 14901. Our sincerest thanks to CareFirst and all the professionals that helped with the care of Dug's last week.
