Donald J. Smith

ELMIRA – Donald J. Smith, 70, of Elmira, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022. Born on June 27,
1952 in Elmira, NY, he was the son of the late Donald L. and Tillie (Grabowski) Smith. He graduated from
Southside High School class of 1970.
On September 22, 1973, he married Elaine Doty at the First Nazareth Church of Elmira. In March of
1998, he retired from Elmira Correctional Facility after more than 25 years of service in the New York
State Department of Corrections.
Donald loved restoring and working on vintage cars. He also enjoyed building model cars and
researching old cars on the internet. Summers were spent with his family at Camper’s Haven in Bath,
NY. More than anything, he cherished the time that he shared with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Frank Smith; and his sisters-in-law, Patricia Parsons, Jeannie Brilliard and Betty Chamberlan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine D. Smith of Elmira; his sons, Andy (Heather) Smith of
Christiansburg, VA, Lee (Michelle) Smith of Elmira, NY; his loving brother, Mike Smith of Elmira; his
grandchildren, Theresa Smith, Megan Smith, Erica Smith; his great-grandchildren, Betty Visger, Lilliana
Dallas; his sister-in-law, Jo Ann O’Dell of VA; his brother-in-law, Glenn Doty (Karen McLean) of Erin, NY; sister in-law; Susan vane. As well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 11 am - 1 pm on Monday, December 12, 2022 at Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira.  A funeral service will held at 1 pm at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Gillett Cemetery.
