Donald E. Crum, Gone Fishing Age 64, of 17 Hazelwood Ave, Elmira died Thursday, September 26, 2002 at Troy Community Hospital, Troy.Don was born January 1, 1938 in Elmira, NY the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Clinton) Crum.He is survived by his wife Pauline M. Lewis, two daughters: Wendy & Bill Owens, Tina Crum & Leo Westbrook; one son: Jeffrey & Chris Crum, one sister: Francis & Harold Shafer, two brothers: Jack & Martha Crum, Stanley Crum; 5 Grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. Most people know that Don Crum loved the outdoors and spent as much time there as he could, hunting, fishing or even working. You see the man could not sit still!!If he was at a friend or relatives house, he would be out in the yard raking leaves or over at the woodpile chopping or cutting firewood.I have never met a man that has chopped as much firewood as Don Crum and NEVER burned a stick of wood himself. He never owned a wood stove!!But that?s the kind of unique man that he was.He was happy working or putting around. He had the work ethic that we all should emulate!!This is what we would like people to know and remember about Don: He loved the outdoors and respected it.He harvested many trophy bucks, caught many fish and enjoyed them all while showing a great deal of respect toward nature. He was a competitor, while bowling, hunting, fishing or whatever it was he always gave it his best.He had a work ethic rarely seen today.Bud Link of the Corning Food Mart (42 years) had much praise for Don, for his honesty and trustworthiness.Bud says: ?Not only could you count on Donny to have everything out back that was supposed to be there, but if it took him till eleven at night he would go get the product and bring it back.He was a legend in this town.?He was an honest man, while in the field or on the street; he was a law-abiding citizen.Although rarely seen, he was a great dancer. He loved his bride of forty-three years, Polly!!He loved his family and enjoyed his grandchildren. If you want to honor Don Crum, then the next time you see a deer in the field or hear the gobble of a wild turkey remember to treat the outdoors with respect and go out and enjoy all that it has to offer. Also remember when taking on your task at hand, give the effort like Don would have done, and give it your best!!We will never forget him and will always have him in our hearts. We know when we take the time to ?go fishing?; he will be there with us.Calling hours will be Saturday, September 28, 2002 from 11:00 to 1:30 PM at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY.The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira with Rev.
