Cindy L. Slater

Cindy L Slater (nee: Messing) Age 78 of Pine City, NY. It is with much grief and sadness we share that our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Cindy Slater passed away on August 4, 2021 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Cindy passed on to her Lord and Savior at her beloved Pine City home surrounded by her loving and devoted husband, her daughters , and grandchildren. Cindy was born on July 30, 1943 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of Clarence and Geraldine (Ward) Messing. Cindy graduated from Southside High School, the Class of 1961. Her senior year she enjoyed being the Drum Majorette of the marching band. After high school graduation, Cindy attended Grace Downs Airline & Secretarial School in New York City. Cindy and her husband Gene were high school sweethearts and married September 24, 1966. For 62 years of togetherness, they created a relationship and bond that resulted in unbounded love and devotion for each other. They were looking forward to celebrating 55 years of marriage in September 2021. Cindy's greatest love and joys during her marriage were raising and caring for her daughters, Wendy and Brenda, her husband, and 6 grandchildren. She was always in attendance at any sporting event or activity that her daughters or grandchildren were involved with. Cindy was a superb homemaker and lovingly cared for her home. She enjoyed decorating for every holiday (especially Christmas), and tending to her flowers and bushes. She enjoyed baking treats for her family, going on vacations, bowling, and being with and visiting her friends. Cindy had fond memories of her vacation with Gene to the Hawaiian Islands. Cindy was a long-time employee and retired from Guthrie Medical Group (Southport) as a medical secretary. Cindy was grateful for everything she had in life and was a very loving, compassionate, and kind person. Cindy will be missed by all who knew her, however, the many wonderful memories she helped create will be cherished forever. Cindy was a long-time, devoted member of Bethany Lutheran Church (Elmira). Cindy was predeceased by her mother, Geraldine Messing in 2015, her grandparents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Cindy is survived by her loving husband, Gene Slater, her daughter, Wendy Slater with Robert Young and children, Zackarie, Reilly, Mikaelie, and Aislinn, daughter, Brenda with her husband, Josh Moshier and their children, Molly and Max. Cindy is also survived by her father, Clarence Messing and brother, Dann Messing. Cindy treasured the 45 year friendship of beloved friends, Becky & Bob Corcoran, Bonnie & Jim Cummings, and Paul & Joyce Mittan. Family and friends are invited to call Sunday, August 15, from 4-8 PM at the Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira. A service of Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 16 at 1:00 PM at Bethany Lutheran Church, 256 S. Walnut St., Elmira. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation in Cindy's name to Bethany Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society, the Chumung County SPCA, or the charity of one's choice.
