Carol J. Smith

Carol J. Smith, a native of Rock Stream, NY and resident of Newfield, NY passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 93 on July, 11, 2024.

Carol was born November 26, 1930 and grew up in the small town of Rock Stream on a small farm.  In her youth, she played flute and piano, and hoped to become a concert flutist.  Music has always been an important part of her life, evidenced by her collection of close to a thousand record albums, most of which were converted to digital and enjoyed by her until her passing.

She moved to Elmira, NY where she attended business school and began working for a credit bureau.  She met her husband Walter in Elmira, where they settled down and raised two daughters.  She was proud to be active in Credit Women’s International, traveling to their conferences.  She also loved playing euchre, which she enjoyed up through the months before her passing.

Carol was a loving wife and mother, instilling her kind and giving nature into her children and grandchildren.  While we mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing she is celebrating her reunion with all her loved ones who predeceased her.

Carol was preceded in death by: her parents, Harry and Hazel (Hatfield) Jessop; her sister, Verna (Jessop); her husband Walter Smith; and her daughter Maxine (Smith) DeWitt, as well as many other loved ones.

She is survived by: her daughter Phyllis (Smith) Chi and husband Dennis Winge; her five grandchildren – Katrina (DeWitt) Myers and husband David Myers, Theodore DeWitt, Christopher Chichester, Jennifer Chichester, and Alexander Chichester; and step-grandson Max Winge.

The family would like to thank staff at both Oak Hill Manor and Groton Community Health Care Center, where she received excellent care during times of need.

In honor of her final wishes, friends and family are invited to a graveside service on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn National Cemetery, where Carol will be interred with her beloved husband.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tully Hill Treatment and Recovery, 5821 State Route 80, Tully, NY 13159, or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741. Arrangements have been entrusted to Olthof Funeral Home.
