Sorino, Carmen D. Beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend Age 78 of Spruce Street and a life-long resident of Elmira, NY, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2001 at St. Joseph?s Hospital. He was born February 19, 1923 in Elmira, the son of the late John and Josephine (Petruciani) Sorino. Carmen is survived by his loving children: Jacquelyn French of Elmira, NY; Jennifer (Michael) Alvaro also of Elmira, NY; John (Teri) Sorino of Troy, NY; beloved grandchildren, Danielle (Joseph) McKain, Jason French, Amy Alvaro, Christopher Alvaro, Daniel Sorino, Justin Sorino, Mikaela Sorino and Scott Sorino; great grandchildren, Kolin Joseph and Peyton Carmen McKain; sister, Mary Miller of Cairo, NY; brother, Lidio (Lulu) Sorino of Pine City, NY; sister, Vincee Sorino of Elmira, NY; along with several nieces and nephews. Carmen graduated from Southside High School in 1943. In December of 1942 he joined the Navy and spent 3 ½ years aboard a ship serving in the Atlantic, North Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during WW II. Upon his return to civilian life, Carmen worked for the Remington Rand and the A & P Food Plant. He coached Small Fry Baseball, Small Fry Football, Semi-Pro Football and was a certified Track Official. Carmen?s connection to SHS spans the past 55+ years. He was not only a fine athlete as a student in the late 30?s and 40?s, but he has been a loyal, dedicated supporter and fan since his graduation. Carmen?s many contributions include coaching JV Football and also serving as President of the Southside Booster Club for several terms. Despite Carmen?s impressive list of contributions, his most important impact on the Southside High School community often went unnoticed by many adults. That contribution was his love and dedication toward student athletes. Carmen was always there for the kids, boys and girls, freshman through seniors. He was there to tapetheir ankles, to give them a ride to or from practice, or to pat them on the back when they needed it. Carmen has had a positive influence on many SHS athletes. They went to Carmen for many things. They asked his advice on everything from how to throw a football, to where to go on to college, to how to improve their grades, to what sneakers to buy. He gave great advice, and has always kept the kids best interest in mind. Carmen helped make our athletes better men and women. His contributions will live on in the lives of the athletes he has helped. Carmen was a true Southsider.
