Alice Virtue Taggart Heebner, 94, a two-year resident of The Falls Home, Montour Falls, and formerly of Elmira, passed away peacefully Saturday April 13 after a brief illness at Schuyler Hospital in Watkins Glen, N.Y.She was a retired schoolteacher. Mrs. Heebner was born Alice Virtue Taggart, June 30, 1907 in Big Flats, NY, oldest of the three children. She graduated from Odessa High School in 1923 and received her NYS Teacher?s Certificate in 1924. She taught from 1924 to 1928 when she married. She resumed teaching in 1956 until she retired in 1969, during which time she earned her Bachelor?s degree in Education from SUNY Cortland in August 1962. She taught at Southport #14, Chemung #4, Pine City and Mountain View schools before finishing her career at the Pine City consolidated school. She was a life-long member of the New York State Teacher?s Association. She is survived by her son, Dan, and his wife, Gail, of Raleigh, NC; ten grandchildren, Carol Ann Sowolla and her husband Kris of Los Gatos, CA, John Richard Heebner, Jr. and his wife, Lynn of Ann Arbor, MI, Robert Charles Heebner and his wife Donna of Whitmore Lake, MI, Eric Heebner of Attica, NY, Octavia Brooks of Portland, OR, Veronica Rose Rice of Ecorse, MI, Heather Lynn St. Claire Heebner of Raleigh, NC, Ryan Lee Rice of Traverse City, MI and Angela Hope St. Claire Heebner of Raleigh, NC. There are seven great grandchildren, Dorothy Julia, Hannah Rose, Brook Cameron, Lindsey Susan and Bobby Chuck, Terra Estelle Strand and Crystal Dale Strand, all of Michigan. Her other survivors include her nephew, the Honerable Justice Leon F. Taggart of Bath, NY; a niece, Dr. P.C. Slutzker of Penn Yan and a daughter in law, Virginia Josephine Heebner of Traverse City, MI;Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Charles Heebner of Elmira: two sons, Charles Bernard (Moe) Heebner and his wife, Ann, of Attica, NY, and John Richard Heebner of Traverse City, MI; a sister, Florence Taggart Cook of Penn Yan, NY, and a brother, Frank Taggart, also of Penn Yan. Those who knew Alice well can take some comfort knowing she died while doing one of her favorite things, eating, and while eating her favorite meal, breakfast. She simply sat back in her chair and quietly passed away. In and around family circles, Alice was well respected for her cooking and baking prowess, particularly for her apple pies. Visitation will be at the Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira Wednesday evening, April 17, between 6:30 and 8:30. Alice?s memorial service will be 11:00 AM Thursday April 18, at Olthof Funeral Home.As she requested, Alice?s body will be cremated and the ashes buried next to her husband in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira.
