Service, Alexander Filkins Age 89, of Stuart, Florida, and Elmira, New York, died on July 30, 2018.He served in the Navy on the USS Roosevelt from 1946 through 1949 and then in the Air Force as a medical tech in Sacramento. He was thereafter employed for over 30 years at Thatcher Glass Manufacturing.He was born in Utica, New York, on April 5, 1929, the son of Alexander G. and Wilhelmina F. Service.In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by brother Stuart Service and Sister Dolores Williams and by his former wife and friend Bebe Chandler Service. He is survived by his dearest friend and loving companion of over 35 years Helen Dozack, also of Stuart, Florida, and Elmira, New York.Also surviving is his brother, John Service of Marcy, New York; his children:Alex D. Service of Painted Post, Robert C. Service of Horseheads, Christopher S. Service of Horseheads, Bebe Bartlett and husband Stephen of Silver Lake, New Hampshire, and David A. Service with fiancée Joanna Birdsong of Marina, California; grandchildren Barbara A. Service, Scott M. Service, Greg VanHouten, Meghan B. Watts, M. Kathleen O’Brien, and Daniel P. O’Brien; and 6 great grandchildren. Calling hours, with service immediately following, will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2018, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.at Olthof Funeral Home 1050 Pennsylvania Ave. Elmira/Southport, NY.Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Evergreen Cemetery in Lake George.
